ChatGPT PDF not generating? How to fix file_gen:generate_pdf
You asked ChatGPT for a PDF and got no download link. Sometimes the chat shows a line like file_gen:generate_pdf, sometimes it says the file could not be created, and sometimes the link opens an error. This guide explains why and gives four quick fixes.
Why ChatGPT fails to generate a PDF
- The model or mode cannot create files. When file tools are not available, the call to file_gen:generate_pdf is shown as text instead of running.
- The document is too long. Large reports, many tables or images can time out during PDF creation.
- The download link expired. Generated files are often kept only for a short time. Reloading an old chat can show "file not found".
- Busy servers. File generation fails more often at peak hours.
Fix 1: Convert the text yourself (fastest)
- Reply:
Give me the full document as Markdown in the chat, not as a file. - Copy the answer.
- Paste it into the free PDF generator and click Download PDF.
Your text stays in your browser. Tables, lists and headings are kept.
Fix 2: Retry in a new chat
Open a new chat, choose a model that supports file creation and ask again. Keep the request short, for example "Create a 2-page PDF of this report".
Fix 3: Split long documents
Ask for the document in parts, generate each part, or combine the Markdown and convert it once with the generator.
Fix 4: Ask for another format
If PDF keeps failing, ask for a Word or Markdown file instead, then export or convert it to PDF.
Is file_gen:generate_pdf an error on my computer?
No. It is the name of the AI's internal PDF tool. Seeing it means the tool call did not finish. Nothing is wrong with your device or account. Read more about what file_gen:generate_pdf means.
